All Around Amsterdam

On this trip to Amsterdam, we planned to stay longer with the ability to travel around seeing other places. Another plus of this trip was meeting up with my dear friend Terry for a day, who was also touring through Europe on vacation.

One day we took a trip by train to Den Haag. We were dropped off on the far side of town and walked what seemed like forever to get to the North Sea where Jim was introduced to his new favorite beer, a Trippist. Along the way we stopped and checked out the Peace Palace, MC Escher museum (which happened to be closed) and accidentally ran into the American Embassy on a side street. It was a fun day exploring and seeing something new.

We spent time wandering around Amsterdam seeing places we missed the first visit. We visited the National Holocaust Memorial, quite sad. After that the craziest thing happened, we stopped at a cafe for a drink and I kid you not we ran into Terry. We were supposed to connect at a meeting point in the morning.....out of all of Amsterdam and all there is to see we ended up in the same place and time. After that we visited Artis Royal Zoo where a butterfly loved me. Then we walked through the Micropia Exhibit, which focused on bacteria. It was very interesting.

A few days later we woke to a horrible storm, trees blown over, trams and trains down so we took a day of rest and had massages at the hotel. When the weather finally let up it was about 7:00 pm so we ventured out for a wonderful dinner on the canal then to a concert Jim booked for us at Het. Concert Gebouw Hall starting at 11:59 pm, yes midnight. We saw Alain Clark, he was amazing and fun. We didn’t get back to the hotel until about 2:30 am and we needed to be up early to take the train to Düsseldorf Germany for a few days, this should be fun.

The next morning we were troopers and made it to Düsseldorf, Germany. One of the many things I love about traveling is the challenge to figure out where you are going without having any idea where you are. It's like a game for Jim and I; we get off the train and with nothing but the address we try finding our hotel with no help only the use of city maps and together we figure it out. I was a little nervous when we first arrived because nothing was in English, but it only took us an hour to find our place. Once there we dropped off our stuff and took off venturing around to some beautiful parks and churches. We went to the Rhein River and hung out there for a while and then went to the very top of the Rhein Tower restaurant overlooking Düsseldorf. It was weird because all the tables slowly rotated around the glass the whole time, it was pretty to see but not easy on the stomach.

Our last few days were spent just enjoying all that Amsterdam has to offer!
