Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca City is packed full of heritage sites, churches, museums and slug bugs, remember those? With its colorful historic center and equally impressive nightlife, we were never at a loss of things to do. We stayed down the street from the Panteon General, the largest cemetery in the city, hoping to have a front row view as Dia de los Martes crept closer. Unfortunately, it was still closed due to Covid and construction.
Oaxaca was cool with daily showers that usually lasted only a few hours. Streets were swept daily and there wasn't a single person we met without a smile on their face. With excellent, efficient and cheap public transportation, getting around was easy unless the random everyday protests closed the roads. Like when when the local union of garbage collectors dumped truckload of garbage on the mayors front lawn after protesting for a week.
Unique, beautiful and intriguing, Oaxaca far surpassed any preconceived ideas we may have had before arriving.
Below are some stories.
