Sozopol, Bulgaria- August 2022
We arrived in Sozopol by ferry from the dock in old town Nessebar. It cost 37 Lev ($19) and was a 45 minute ride. Nobody fell overboard, thanks to the guy taking his job way too seriously and clapping if anyone ventured anywhere close to the railings.
It was a fiasco getting to our place. Unfortunately the address on the Airbnb listing was incorrect and our home was located at the highest point of the peninsula, now an hour walk into town. Since there was no transportation around this area, we did a lot of walking.
Wrong Place Right Time Story
We spent a day at the closest beach, Bamboo Beach, a 25 minute walk from our house. It was less crowded than the beaches in town and had the most amazing crystal clear water.
Another day was spent with Jim's mom, Judy and her friend Candy sharing travel experiences, laughing over fun stories and moments of forgetfulness, like...what's your name?
We explored the old town of Sozopol, which was similar to Nessebar with cobblestone streets, wooden houses, quaint little shops and restaurants with beautiful views of the sea. We visited the Sozopol Archaeological museum where we saw the famous vampire remains, the St. Cyril and Methodius Church, St. Nikolous church and the ruins of the Medieval monastery, St. Apostles. We walked down to the CesepHa KpenocTHa CTEHA, a preserved arch, the Fortress walls and the windmill. We stopped for a refreshing drink at Ginny's beach bar where we were entertained by a dog and remote control RC car. During the long trek home we stopped to take a much needed siesta at Harmanite beach.
Some days were spent at home lounging by the pool, catching a sunrise or two and finalized last minute details before our next adventure into Turkey. We watched a lightning storm, saw a few rainbows and witnessed a rare migration of Demoiselle crane, as Sozopol is one of the only places in Bulgaria they fly over on their way down to India.
In hindsight, Sozopol would have been a better place to stay for a month, even though that might be too long, unless you had the intention of just doing nothing. We could have just taken the ferry into Nessebar for a few days. Sozopol was more laid back and seemed to have more evening entertainment catering to people our age and a lot quieter. This was the place where we realized it's really all about location, location, location. (and transportation in our case)
